Week 1 in college football was kind of strange in my opinion with a couple of top tier teams struggling against “easy opponents”. Since I am an Arizona State Sun Devils fan I will talk about ASU Football every week they have a game. Since ASU is in the PAC 12, I may have a Bias on talking about PAC-12 Football games. I will try my best not to do that.
ASU vs New Mexico State
ASU did not make it easy for their fans on Thursday night against New Mexico State. After the 1st Quarter, ASU made it look easy with the score of 14-0. At the half, though ASU was up 14-13. That catch by Jaleel Scott was to make it a 1 score game was the College Football play of the week in my opinion.
In the 3rd quarter, ASU opened up the score with a field goal after a 13 play, 41-yard drive. Kind of disappointing to have a 13 play drive go only 41 yards. Averaging about 3 yards a play that drive. That will not win you football games especially against teams like Stanford, USC, and Washington State. Wilkins did show his ability to throw a better pass when he connected with Humphrey for a 60-yard touchdown in the middle of the 3rd quarter to bring the score 23 to 13 ASU.
In the 4th quarter, ASU had their largest lead of the night thanks to Kobe Williams pick-6 which made the score 37 to 13. At this point, I thought ASU was gonna cruise to an easy week 1 victory and calm my nerves a little. I just hope ASU can become better as the season progresses, but in my honest opinion, I doubt that will happen
Western Michigan vs USC
For USC this was supposed to be a walk in the park. A warm up game that was to show the whole Pac-12 that USC is here to kick your butt with no mercy.
This game was tied or Western Michigan had the lead for the 1st 3 quarters. USC finally took control of the game in the 4th quarter to make it look like an easy win. The final score was 49 to 31. The USC Trojans have the offense to outscore the best in the nation, but their rush defense should be a concern. They will host the Stanford Cardinal next week in the coliseum. Stanford has been a run first team since Andrew Luck has left for the NFL.
The real story of this game was Jake Olsen, the Blind Long Snapper for the USC Trojans. He delivered a perfect snap for the last extra point of the game. Jake Olsen also got to hold The Trojan Warriors sword in victory after the game.
Michigan vs Florida
In my preview, I had this game #2 best game of the week, but it turned out to be a mostly one sided game. Florida needs to fix its discipline issues, as they had 10 players suspended for this game including their top 2 offensive playmakers. The Florida Gators defense did the best they could do. They returned 2 interceptions for a touchdown. When your offense only scores 3 points there is really good chance you are not gonna win.
Michigan’s defense came out and played well even though they had new starters. Again this defense only allowed 3 points to a #17 team. Even though Wilton Speight had a handful of bad throws, which included a pick-6, Michigan’s offense was still running on all cylinders compared to what looks like to be their back up. Michigan, in my opinion, is going to jump to #8 for beating a ranked opponent while the current number 8,9,10 teams did not face any real competition this week.
Florida has to regroup. They will get players back for next weeks game. The Defense has a chance to be great like last year, but they do have to find a QB. Franks and Ziare could not get the Florida Offense rolling at any point of the game. Only 2 drives went for 30+ yards and no touchdowns were scored by the Florida offense.
Florida State Vs Alabama
This was my game of the week in the previews. The first half was a defensive battle with the Crismon Tide up 10 to 7 thanks to a Jalen Hurts long touchdown pass down the middle on a post play. I felt like Florida State went to the reverse too much in this game especially after they got it back on the shanked punt.
Alabama played like how Alabama plays. Good passing, good rushing, and good defense. They do say Alabama is a 2nd half team, and they sure played like it. The Alabama defense and special teams really played a big role in the team’s victory. The special teams blocked a field goal and a punt, and also forced a fumble on a kick off which resulted in a drive starting on the Florida State 5 yard line. The defense allowed only 7 points and forced 2 interceptions. The Alabama defense held Florida State to 40 yards of rushing, which in any game is very hard to do.
Florida State now has to regroup and not panic. They will fall in the AP poll and probably will not make the playoff 4. They have lost Francois to a knee injury for the rest of the year and will have to rely on their back up and the run game.
I would like to hear comments on this article and what I should do for the upcoming weeks.
